The Band is an offshoot of the Community light Orchestra (founded 1987).
It was suggested that the Orchestra wind players form a small group to
provide music where appropriate. Nine musicians volunteered and
started practices in a member's home. One of these was ex army and
became the first player/conductor. Eventually a venue for rehearsal
was found in Saint Clements hospital Chapel Ipswich.
As the band enlarged and progressed it found
subsequent musical directors who worked hard to improve the standard.
Our current Musical Director Mr. Tom Rumbold took over from
Peter Gray on 1st November 2006. Peter, in his turn, had taken over
from Brian Stansmore who passed away in April 2003. At Brians
"Memorial Concert" Peter had composed a concert march in
memory of Brian simply called "Stansmore".
For over 15 years the band has played at venues
throughout East Suffolk for fetes, garden parties, galas and not least
schools where both pupils and teachers enjoy the morning and learn
about music making.
The current 25 men and women members play the type of
instruments required for a military style band. This includes cornet,
trombone, bassoon, saxophone, tuba, drums percussion, and French horn.
The Band enjoy making music
together and maintaining a happy social atmosphere.
